Nyamata is the main town of Bugesera district, a short drive south of Kigali across the Nyabarongo river.
The Nyamata and Ntarama church memorials are among the most important sites of remembrance in Rwanda. Lakes Cyohoha and Rweru attract birdwatchers, and lakeside lodges make a calm weekend away from the city.
